We all make a beauty so wonderfully true.
We are special and different, and just the same, too!
So whenever you look at your beautiful skin, from your wiggling toes to your giggling grin...
Think how lucky you are that the skin you live in, so beautifully holds the "You" who's within.”

The Skin You Live In: With the ease and simplicity of a nursery rhyme, this lively story delivers an important message of social acceptance to young readers. Themes associated with child development and social harmony, such as friendship, acceptance, self-esteem, and diversity are promoted in simple and straightforward prose. Vivid illustrations of children's activities for all cultures, such as swimming in the ocean, hugging, catching butterflies, and eating birthday cake are also provided. Reflections:

Randi: Great easy reader for the classroom! Uses simple, silly rhymes to address the topic of diversity and self image as well as acceptance. I feel this would be a great first day of school read aloud because it will let everyone know they belong in the classroom.

Carrie: Michael Tyler's book The Skin You Live in, portrays diversity in skin color in a rhyming lyrical manner. He represents all skin types and shows how you do everything in your skin and your skin makes you who you are. The pages are colorful and inviting. This literature selection would be wonderful for younger elementary grades.
